Since it is Friday the 13th I thought I would take a look at the superstitions surrounding this day.
Friday the 13th is considered so unlucky because it combines the superstitious fears about both Friday and the number 13; making it one extremely unlucky day. Take Friday for example. There are many things you shouldn’t do on a Friday if you want to be safe and happy. Such as – don’t change your bed sheets on a Friday unless you want to have bad dreams. If you start a journey on a Friday – particularly by boat – you will have nothing but misfortune. And starting a sewing project on a Friday and being unable to finish it in the same day, apparently causes bad luck. As for the number 13, I could only find one superstition – if 13 people sit down and have a meal together, one of them will die before the year is out. You can see why a superstitious people may have a problem with this day.
The superstitious fears surrounding this day are deeply entrenched in our culture today and many manifestations of it can be seen in our everyday lives. Such as, many high-rises do not have a thirteenth floor; airports without a 13th gate, and hospitals and hotels that don’t have a room number 13. These are just to name a few.
In today’s world, most of us know that these superstitions are silly and put no stock in them. So if I am writing this from my bed with its dirty sheets and my doors locked tight, it’s only because I’m on vacation and too lazy to venture out today. It is certainly not because I put any stock in some silly superstitions.
This is all I have for you today. May you all have a wonderfully lucky Friday the 13th.
