I’m still working on my Viking novel. About 70,000 words in and I wonder if I will ever finish it. Story wise, it’s only about 1/3 finished. I often find my mind swimming with plans and lines for this particular WIP and I can’t wait to get to my computer to get it all down. This is not constant; sometimes it leaves my mind altogether. (Yeah, some of you may be shaking your heads in shame for me.)
There are ideas that come to me and I think they are the bee’s knees. A best seller for sure! Excitement bubbles up inside of me and I’m ready to write every line ready to rear its beautiful head.
Then remind myself I have to finish this Viking novel — and it’s potential sequel. That’s my baby, my priority. If I don’t finish it first, I won’t finish anything in my life. I don’t have kids, but I’d be willing to bet that in moments of weakness parents sometimes feel like trading in their own kids for others’. They can’t do that and neither can I with my little baby.
I clearly don’t write my story ideas down. (Ok, sometimes I at least write down my crazy dreams, like the one where I turned into a great red dragon or the rich black Pegasus that feeds from the light of the sun.) Otherwise I would never forget any of them. Be it laziness or just the thought that if the idea is worth anything I won’t forget it, most of my ideas are sometimes born then die hours later.
Other times my head gets stuck in stories I’ve been waiting to write since before I even started my Viking novel, especially the one set in Mughal India. I have the whole story line plotted in my head. This is the one, of all the interesting ideas I’ve had for stories, I haven’t forgotten about while waiting for the Viking finale.
So what does this mean? Does it mean I should be writing all my story ideas down? Or does it mean that the best ideas are the ones I’ll remember anyway? As of today, I’m of the latter opinion, but I wonder if it would be best to write ideas down anyway. What could I lose?
