Can we talk for a minute about creating a Writer Platform? For those of you who may not know, a Writer Platform is the writers’ visibility to the public. In today’s publishing market, a writer must be able to successfully promote herself/himself. A writer has to convince their readers that they are a “brand name” product that the reader can’t do without. As a new author, I can tell you that creating a writer platform is a very daunting task.
There has been a big shift to digital publishing and e-books in the last few years. Amazon has made it possible for anyone to digitally publish their work. This has made the market over-crowded and the competition to sell books fierce. If you want people to read your book, you have to find a way for you and your books to stand out from the competition. There are many ways to promote yourself – writing blogs, having a website, cultivating personal contacts of people who can help you market yourself, and having a social media presence (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) are some of the tools that a writer with a successful Writer Platform will use.
I’m new to the writing gig – just beginning to create my Writer Platform. A few things that I have tried have failed – such as an author page on Facebook that I hope everyone has forgotten so that I can restructure it and give it another try. But it’s all okay – with every failure comes knowledge on what I can do better next time. For all those new writers out there who are in the same boat as I am and are overwhelmed with the thought of having to create a Writer Platform, this is what I would advise: experiment – find what works for you and what doesn’t. Talk to those writers you know who make the self-promoting look easy and see what tips they may have. But above all, please don’t get discouraged and give up.
This is all I have at the moment. During the next week or so I am going to be working on improving my Writer Platform. I will give you an update in my next blog. Hopefully I will have learned some useful tips that I will be able to pass along. Have a wonderful week.
